What is Grounding?
And what does it feel like to be unGrounded?
Grounding is simply making the connection between your head and your body.
If you’re not quite here, if your mind feels “fuzzy” or you’re having trouble focusing on what you’re doing, if you're driving and you can't remember how you got 'here'; these are all signs of being ungrounded, of being disconnected.
And if that's the case, revisit one of these grounding exercises to make sure you have both feet firmly on the ground.
You do your best work when we're grounded - when you're fully connected, and aware of yourself and the world around you.
We have three grounding exercises for you that we have explored during this program:
- Grounding with the sound "HO"
- Using toning to ground
- The Paper Plate dance
Suggestions for grounding following a sound session:
There are many other ways to ground as well. Here are some common ways that are often effective.
- Massage the client’s feet.
- Sweep your hands down each leg with quick motions. End each sweep by holding the feet for a few seconds.
- Use the 128 Hz fork at the K1 point on each foot. (No more than twice on each point).
- Drink water or eat something - chocolate is particularly effective.
- Tone “uhhh” several times using the low range of the voice.
- Have the client sniff the Grounding Oil (Young Living). Alternatively, rub a drop of Grounding Oil on each foot. (Check for sensitivity first).
- Have the client hold a dark stone (tourmaline, smoky or black quartz, obsidian) for a few minutes.
- Have the client move their body gently. Walk or stretch
Grounding with the sound “HO”
Gounding by saying “HO” in a 'forceful' and deliberate way is a very effective, and fast way to ground. Combined with movement like walking, or even better, stomping your feet, it's even more effective. At times where it's inappropriate to do the exercise verbally, use a silent “HO”. Once you have connected with the actual sound and feeling when verbalizing it, you can recreate it silently with similar results, simply by recalling the sound and the sensation.
The Paper Plate Dance
This activity is an unusual, but highly effective exercise to do before a meeting where you need creative thinking especially if the meeting is after lunch, or late in the day, when people are low in energy. It incorporates movements from Brain gym or educational kinesiology. Whenever you cross the body in certain ways, you connect the hemispheres of the brain, making more of the brain available to you. I also recommend that you do this at home when you really need a boost of energy. It's a really fun thing to do with your kids before they tackle their homework. Great for grounding, for sparking inspiration, or simply a quick "pick-me-up" The music is "Congo" from the CD "Mandala" by Locos Bravos.
Important Caution
Be sure that you (and your client) are fully grounded prior to working with machinery, or anything else that requires your attention (driving / cooking / etc).
Failure to do so can result in accident and/or injury
